This is my white whale.
I have studied locations and times and dates, looked out my window while darkness told me dawn is not yet, and this I did for many years now. And for those many times, I came close, but most often I did not.
The morning was calm. The quiet broken only by faint chirps of what I could only guess to be crickets, and the rustling of the not quite knee-high grass as the occasional cool breeze brushed against them. From a distance I see a hiker or two tracing the narrow winding trails, dogs in the lead, their path lit only by whatever ambient light the twilight reflected.
The sky was brightening, and yet the clouds were still gray, and the all too familiar thought of I-think-I-should-have-just-stayed-in-bed grew louder in my head. It is not without merit, as the season is almost finished, and for many a morning I have waited in this very same spot only to go home empty-handed.
Today, fate reserved the doubloon for me. Today, I finally see my white whale.
There she blows!
